How Iron Buzz Tattoos Became More Than just a Premium Tattoo Studio.

Back in 2013, Ironbuzz started as a tiny tattoo studio in Mumbai — just 150 sq. ft., one artist, and a dream to create tattoos that mattered.

We weren’t aiming to be the biggest. We just wanted to be good — really, really good. We focused on the work, the people, and building a space where artists and clients could share something meaningful. And over time, that little room in 2013 grew. Slowly, organically, it became what Ironbuzz is today — a 3000 sq. ft. tattoo and art studio in the heart of Bandra's Chimbai Village.

But the journey wasn’t always obvious.

Growth? Sure.

Like most growing businesses, we asked ourselves: “What’s next?” Do we open multiple branches? Do we scale fast? Build a corporate system with strict processes and roles?

The answer we found was: No.

Because that kind of growth would’ve meant treating people, our artists, our back-end team, our clients, like cogs in a machine. And Ironbuzz was never built like that. We didn’t want our artists to become robots, or our clients to feel like just another appointment.

So, we went back to the drawing board.

The Answer Was Always There

We realised what made Ironbuzz special wasn’t the brand. It was the people who built it. The ones who showed up every day to create. The ones who trusted us with their stories. And that’s how the #BeeYourStory campaign was born.

#BeeYourStory is all about the real humans behind the tattoos. Our clients, our artists, the friends who walk in for a tattoo and leave with memories. It’s personal, sometimes deep, sometimes funny, always honest.

We started filming short 1-minute videos with our clients, where they shared why they got tattooed, how they found us, or simply who they are. Ten videos in, and we saw something powerful: people saw themselves in each other’s stories. That’s when we knew — this campaign was more than content. It was a community.

And nothing captured that idea more than BUZZ — the short film based on the life of Eric Jason D’souza, cofounder and Chief artist of IronBuzz. The film explores his personal journey with loss, resilience, and finding healing through tattooing. BUZZ touched hearts across the country, and that kind of storytelling- raw, real, unfiltered — is the spirit of Ironbuzz.

A new beginning in Chimbai Village

In 2024, we found a beautiful plot in Chimbai Village, Bandra West — a cozy fishing village that’s still full of charm and culture. We built our new studio here, right where the first Chimbaikar family settled over 65 years ago. And it felt right. Like coming home.

We didn’t want it to be just another slick city studio. We wanted something grounded, warm, and open. So we brought in Mazi Coffee Bar & Kitchen to open their second café inside Ironbuzz.

Mazi isn’t just any café — it belongs to our friend of many years, Shashank Kadam, a seasoned restaurateur who’s been in the hospitality space for a long time. When we shared our idea of turning the consultation area into a communal space with a café, his answer was an immediate “YES!” No questions, no hesitation. Just pure belief in what we were building.

Now, that consultation area is a beautiful open café where you can chill, eat, sip great coffee, and be part of something. Even if you don’t want a tattoo (yet), you’re still welcome to hang.

Surprises and Serendipity

One day, a quiet figure appeared in our café again and again. He listened, watched, absorbed the energy. That was Jeff Goldberg: acclaimed actor, director, and founder of one of Mumbai’s top acting schools. Jeff felt the spark and simply said, “Let’s build something together.”

From that spontaneous moment grew The Chimbai Village Theatre, a home for plays, acting workshops, poetry nights, yoga, and movement. Suddenly, the lines between tattoo studio, café, and stage blurred, and we realized: this was always the dream.

So what are we now?

We’re still a tattoo studio — and a damn good one. But we’re also a café, a theatre, a cultural space, and a place where stories unfold.

We didn’t expand by opening ten branches. We built one super studio that does everything — with heart.
